Volunteering

At MBDA we take responsibility for making a difference, not just in the work that we do with our armed forces to protect our nation and our allies, but also in how we impact the communities around us.

Our people are encouraged to assemble their teams and lend their time to charities of their choosing. That is why we offer both paid and unpaid leave for volunteering with no effect on their annual leave entitlement. 

We often hear internally of colleagues supporting a range of projects and charities, raising money or running events, or volunteering on local community projects. 

This week, our UK Resourcing team were took their opportunity and volunteered at a local school to maintain and tidy the outside garden areas of the school’s grounds.

Rob, one of our Internal Recruitment Managers, took the lead on organising the team’s ‘expert’ weeding, trimming and digging skills. He said, “What better way to start the week than volunteering at a local infant school. The school grounds looked fantastic once we had finished, and the school were so appreciative of the work we had done. Brilliant teamwork!”.

Another great example of volunteer work using our scheme is courageous Lee, who works in one of our System Engineering teams, and volunteers on the Severn Area Rescue Association (SARA) lifeboat. Lee explains that “In my role as lifeboat crew, I can be called upon at a moment’s notice to drop everything and respond to calls for help.  As this could be at any time, MBDA and my team I work in generously allow me to do this during working hours, not just outside of work.”

As an example of this, Lee recalled an incident last month where he responded to the SARA Beachley lifeboat crew being called out to reports of a person in the water downstream of the M48 Bridge. Working with the Coastguard and RNLI the casualty was located, rescued from the water and taken to hospital. Lee added, “It was a good result. If it wasn’t for the brilliant support I get from MBDA and my colleagues for volunteering, and allowing me to respond, I wouldn’t have had the privilege of being part of this “shout” and perhaps we wouldn’t have been able to get onto the water so promptly.”
