Apprentice engineer shortlisted for 2024 MAKE UK Manufacturing Award
Tuesday 22 October 2024
We’re proud to share the news that one of our engineering apprentices has been shortlisted for the Midlands and East region Engineering Apprentice of the Year: Final Year award for the Midlands and East region in the MAKE UK Manufacturing Awards 2024.
Niamh, one of our environmental engineering apprentices, has been shortlisted for the award open to apprentices currently undertaking an engineering apprenticeship within the manufacturing sector, and completing their apprenticeship in 2024.
Reacting to her shortlisting, Niamh said, “This is the icing on the cake as I finish my apprenticeship. I am incredibly proud to be shortlisted.”
To secure her shortlisting Niamh had to demonstrate how she had seized the training and development opportunities presented to her during the final year of our apprenticeship programme, and showed judges her demonstrable results.
Niamh demonstrated exceptional dedication and flexibility. Returning to departments where she had previously had a placement as part of her apprenticeship, Niamh helped ensure those departments’ met their deadlines when they were faced with exceptionally high workloads. Such actions make a significant contribution to the success of MBDA and showed Niamh is on track for a flourishing engineering career.
Additionally, Niamh also showed how she uses her time as an apprentice to develop and widen her capabilities beyond the scope of her apprenticeship. This includes her outreach work as a civilian instructor for the Air Cadets. As a training officer for her squadron, Niamh has over 200 hours of recorded volunteering as a STEM ambassador. She is also the treasurer and a founding member of the MBDA netball team.
Reflecting on her apprenticeship up to this point, Niamh says, “The last four years have gone extremely quickly. Being an apprentice has allowed me to achieve academic success whilst building practical skills. I’ve met some inspirational people during this journey and I look forward to seeing where my career in engineering takes me next.”
Well done Niamh and good luck at the awards!
